Windows XP and 98 can't see each other

Hello ! I know this is probably an issue that has been addressed many times,
but i have been unable to find a solution thus far. I have set up a home
network with a new XP and our older PC running Win 98. Both are connected to
an SMC Barricade, the XP wireless, the Win 98 cabled, which is then connected
to DSL. DHCP is enabled, and both systems ping gateway successfully. Win 98
can also ping loopback, it's own IP, and the IP of the XP, successful,
although the XP does not show up on the Newtork neighborhood of the WIN 98
system. The XP can ping loopback, but pinging it's own IP yeilds no reply.
Oddly, the WIN 98 system icon shows up in Network Workgroups, but trying to
open brings up error " you may not have access...... network path not found".
Also, XP cannot ping Win 98. Observing event viewer after this request on the
XP yeilds the "master browser conflict" error message. Also, I don't know if
this detail is important or not, but although the WIN 98 can ping the XP
successfully, the net view \\ command to the same IP address brings back the
error 53 message "computer can't be located". Sorry for the length of this,
but i wanted to get "all the details" out there. Any help or advice would be
greatly appreciated. (i hope it wasn't something simple that i missed !)

Peter,

If the Win98 computer can ping the WinXP computer, but the WinXP computer can't
ping itself, I'd bet you have a name resolution problem.

Please provide ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.
Identify operating system (by name and version) with each ipconfig listing.

Is the XP computer SP2 by any chance?

Once you get all the pinging successful, we can work on permissioning if
necessary.

Cheers,
Chuck

<SNIP IPConfig etc>

Peter,

Please check Windows Firewall settings on Den. Under Exceptions, have you
enabled File and Printer Sharing?

Are you running both Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Printer Sharing
for Microsoft Networks (Local Area Connection - Properties), on each computer?
Do you have shares setup on each?

Are you running NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (Local Area Connection - Properties - TCP/IP
- Properties - Advanced - WINS) on each computer?

Make sure the browser service is running on each computer. Control Panel -
Administrative Tools - Services. Verify that the Computer Browser service shows
with Status = Started.

From Den and from Secondary, please ping and report exact error / success
(apologies that you've already done this):
1) 192.168.2.106
2) 192.168.2.140

Cheers,
Chuck
