Im trying to set up a network between Windows XP Home (sp2) and Windows 98 SE.
They are connected through a router/4 port switch (linksys BEFSR41)
I CAN access the internet using both computers.
The computer with XP (shop1) can access shared folders on the computer with
win 98(shop2)
But the 98(shop2) computer cannot access shared folders on the XP(shop1)
machine.
in fact the 98 machine cant even PING the the XP machine, it times out.
and the XP comp can successfully ping the 98 machine.

I would also like to note that when trying to open the firewall settings. A
message appears saying " Due to an unidentified problem, Windows cannot
display windows firewall settings".

I've been trying to make this work for over two weeks now. Someone please
help.

My system #1 is running XP Pro, my system #2 is running XP Home (both will
all updates) and I'm using a Linksys Router BEFSR41 ver 3 to connect them to
each other and, via a cable modem, to the web.

I had been having issues with them seeing each other in a network setup
until I opted to start #2 first, verify it could 'see' the workgroup, then
start system #1. Each then had no problem interfacing with the other but, if
for some reason I had to reboot/restart #2 then the connection was lost and
could not be regained till system #1 was powered off and system #2 started
by itself.

System #1 runs on a P4 compatible motherboard with built in NIC and system
#2 runs on a PIII motherboard with a PCI NIC. My guess is there is some kind
of hardware incompatibility but I have yet to find an answer, even after
Googleing.

Hope this helps or gives you an idea or two.
