The XP laptop is my company's laptop. It has "Realtime monitoring" installed.
I have it disabled. I also have the company VPN stuff disabled. Is disabling
these enough? Do I have to uninstall them? The new net wizard configuration
did not make the 98 computer recognize the net. If I go to the Network
Neighborhood, and file and printer sharing for microsoft networks client, and
properties, and advanced - I find the browse master and LM announce. I have
them both disabled or no respectively. Is this correct? What is the
equivalent of these in XP. My desk top will not be leaving its perch while I
use the laptop away from home daily.
On your W9x PC, LM announce should be set to No; I set Browse Master to Auto.
I'm not sure that all VPN packages are the same. On one VPN package I used,
I never had to disable it to make my LAN work. On another VPN package, I had
to disable it to be able to access some sites. But, AFAIK, if you disable VPN
and then (maybe) reboot, it should be out of the way.
Realtime monitoring is a property of some AV (AntiVirus) app. Since this is
your company's laptop, it may be difficult to remove and reinstall it without
the "help" of your company's IT gang. So, even though some AV apps have been
known to cause LAN problems, I offer this rather complicated suggestion:
- If you have the capability to reinstall it yourself (i.e., a CD in hand),
then remove it while you chase your LAN problem. And reboot.
- If not, then don't remove it until you've tried everything else, and be
prepared to apologize to the IT gang for messing up their precious work.
Since your LAN works one-way, my primary suspicion is some firewall app on
the XP PC. Double-check that ICF is disabled, since that breaks LANs. Then
hunt for and uninstall any other firewall stuff.
