Windows 2000/98 cannot see Windows XP on LAN

O

O.B.

I have three machines, a laptop with Windows 2000 Pro SP4, a desktop with
Windows XP SP2 (firewall disabled), and another laptop with Windows 98.
They are connected with a LinkSys BEFSX41 router/switch and setup for DHCP.

The Windows XP machine can successfully connect (and ping) to the Windows
2000 machine and the Windows 98 machine.

The Windows 98 machine can successfully connect (and ping) the Windows 2000
machine, but it cannot ping (or connect) to the Windows XP machine.

The Windows 2000 machine can successfully connect (and ping) the Windows 98
machine, but it cannot ping (or connect) to the Windows XP machine.

The Windows 98 machine was able to connect to the Windows XP machine just
about three months ago, so I'm thinking that an automatic update screwed up
my XP configuration to prevent other machines from being able to access its
resources(in this case, a shared folder and a shared printer).

On a whim, I connected all machines to my employer's site using Cisco VPN.
All machines could then see the Windows XP machine.

I really don't know where to go from here. The XP machine's firewall is not
enabled. Help?

Here's the configuration for my XP machine:

IPConfig is most useful when provided for all computers, for comparison.
Frequently, one computer might cause a problem, and another exhibit the problem.

Besides providing "ipconfig /all" for all 3 computers, please run browstat from
the Windows 2000 and Windows XP computers, as "browstat status" AND "browstat
listwfw". See instructions in these articles:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/browstat-utility-from-microsoft.html>
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/command-window.html#Concatenated>

What happens if you enable the SP2 firewall with an exception for File and

OK, you don't have a browser conflict, or a physical network problem.

Besides for checking for a misconfigured or overlooked firewall (particularly
one which might be included with the Cisco VPN!), check registry setting

I just tried that. No luck.

I can't figure out why it works when I connect all machines to my
employer's site with Cisco VPN, but it doesn't with my default LAN
connection.

Are there any tools that I can install on the XP machine to (1) verify
that ping packets are coming in and (2) detect which program is blocking
them?

Please Google in this group for "CISCO VPN". The results will inform you.

Well, sure enough. One of the most recent windows updates reset my VPN
client and reenabled the Cisco VPN firewall. Argh.

On the positive side, I learned a lot of cool things about the master
browser. Thanks@

My pleasure. Seems like the master browser is frequently a symptom, but you do
have to look for the causes, like unknown firewalls.

Thanks for updating us.
