xp name resolution troubles

Hi, thanks in advance for the help. I have a home nework with 3 computers, 2
are running windows 2000 pro & 1 is running xp home sp2. The problem is with
the xp system. I am able to ping the windows 2000 machines from the xp
machine and vice versa. However, the xp machine cannot ping itself. All 3
systems have a good working internet connection out via the router, but I am
not able to file/print share. I have tried the following:

Double checked the component service "computer browser", it is active.
Netbios over tcp/ip enabled (windows 2000 pro systems also have this enabled)
DHCP is enabled
LMHOSTS lookup enabled (not entirely sure what this does)
All systems on same workgroup with a unique name
Firewall is off
File/print sharing installed on all systems
Running a linksys router & hub (all 3 systems connected to hub)
Here are the ipconfig /all settings:

Make sure that a firewall isn't blocking access to the XP computer.

The "Peer-to-Peer" node type (which is actually "Point-to-Point", but
ipconfig gets it wrong) interferes with file and printer sharing. It
means that the computer only uses a WINS server, which isn't available
on workgroup network, for NetBIOS name resolution.

Run the registry editor, open this key:

HLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netbt\Parameters

and delete these values if they're present:

NodeType
DhcpNodeType

Reboot, then try network access again.

If that doesn't fix it, open that registry key again, create a DWORD
value called "NodeType", and set it to 1 for "Broadcast" or 4 for
"Mixed".

For details, see these Microsoft Knowledge Base articles:

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the info, I made the changes to the registry, all computers are
now using the "broadcast" mode on the network. Unfortunately, I still have
the same problem...the xp machine is unable to ping itself, although it can
ping the 2 other coputers on the network, but cannot view their workgroup
names. Also the 2 other computers can ping the xp machine, but cannot view
the xp workgroup name. Any other suggestions, again appreciate the help...

When a computer can't ping itself, the problem is probably caused by a
firewall program that's misconfigured, partially uninstalled, or
otherwise acting up. Running more than one firewall can also cause
problems.

Start the computer in "Safe mode with networking" and try pinging and
accessing it. If that works, the problems in normal mode are almost
certainly caused by a firewall.

Note that some recent antivirus programs (e.g. Norton, PC-cillin) have
firewall components that have to be configured.

Network browsing through My Network Places is inherently unreliable,
and I recommend not using it. To access another computer directly,
without using My Network Places, type the other computer's name in the
Start > Run box in this format:

\\computer

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the heads up about accessing networked computers via \\computer,
this works great in all directions. I did try safe mode w/
networking...still no luck. I am going to completely remove the antivirus
per your suggestion (unfortunately it is norton...). Really appreciate you
taking the time to give me a hand....thanks Steve!
