Windows XP Machine Cannot See Windows 98 Machine on Home Network

I have a home network consisting of two computers: A laptop running Windows
XP SP2 and a desktop running Windows 98 2nd Edition. Both share an internet
connection via a Linksys WRT54G router. Both are currently connected to the
router via ethernet cable. This network worked fine for about a year: I was
able to file share easily between the WinXP and Win98 machines as well as
share a DSL connection. Then, one day I asked a techie at my office set my
XP laptop so that I could access our office server from home using VPN. From
that day forward, my home network stopped working: That is, my Windows 98
desktop stopped being able to "see" my Windows XP laptop and viceversa -
however they can still share my DSL connection. On my Windows 98 desktop, if
I click "Network Neighborhood" The workgroup containing my XP laptop appears
(as it always did prior to the problem) but when I click on the icon I
receive a message saying: "The computer or share name could not be found."

I've played around with settings on both machines for about a week to no
avail: 1. I've re-run the network wizard on the Windows XP laptop, I've
tried changing workgroup names, I've made sure both were in the same
workgroup, I've turned off the XP SP2 firewall, I've changed the network
names of each machine, etc., etc. I've even considered installing Netbeui on
my XP laptop, but am reluctant because it used to file share fine with the
Windows 98 machine without it.

I'm very frustrated. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try:

1. On the XP machine, disable your wireless or your ethernet connection -
you do not need 2 simultaneous connections to the same network.

2. On the XP machine, click Start/Run regedit ENTER.

Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters

Create a new DWORD entry called NodeType (no spaces), set its value to 1.
