Windows XP Administrator

I have windowsxp and it shows a user account and guest account in the
control pannel. How do you make yourself the administrator and what is
the benefit of doing that. So far everthing seems to be fine as it is
but I notice questions about administrator needing to be made to operate
the pc in windowsxp. Any advice would be welcome.

Having administrative priveleges allows one to access/change things normal
users cannot.

Log into the Administrator account (default password is blank), go to
Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management (in classic
view), right-click your username and select Properties, and set your account
as a member of the Administrators group. Reboot and log in as your account.

If you only have one user setup on the computer(not counting the guest or
hidden administrator account), then that user already has admin rights. It
will tell you in control panel, user accounts.
