Windows won't load

Hello, I've had my Dell laptop for over 3 years now and it has worked fine,
until a couple of weeks ago, when I returned to univeristy and the computer
automatically downloaded anit-virus updates, which makes it run slow, and
after a couple of hours it crashes.

Now the computer won't load windows at all. When I press the on button a
black screen appears saying "we're sorry for this inconvenience but windows
was interupted or did not load properly previously" and asks me to choose an
option for loading. Windows begins to load and then a blue screen appears
saying the computer has been shut down to avoid damage, and that this may be
due to any recently installed hardware or software.

Any ideas are much appreciated.

Thanks.

When this page appears
"and asks me to choose an option for loading."

Have you tried the option last known good ?
or
Safe mode where you can do a system restore to a time before your virus
update?
Its very rare but sometime these updates do have a negitive affect on your
system, however they are corrected real fast once the software company finds
out about it, what AV software are you using?

I forgot to add the next time the "blue screen" appears write down the error
code (all of those numbers that don't make any since to you) and post them.

Hi,

The antivirus software is Norton antivirus, and the blue screen says "Unmountable_Boot_Volume" and the technical information is: STOP:0X000000ED (0X8278DE30, 0XC0000006, 0X00000000, 0X00000000)

Does that mean anything to anybody, because I dont know what it means.
Do I need to insert the Windows CD and install Windows again, but does this
mean that all my files are lost as well?

Thanks.

You are getting a blue screen. It has error information on it. The info
from the error message could give a clue as to what went wrong and needs to
be fixed.

What the error code means.

Since this computer is 3 years old I wouls guess that its a damaged file
system.

However, once again have you tried starting in safe mode?

So sorry. You posted the error message but since it was preceded by a quote
mark, I skipped right over it! I see Mike caught it though and has
responded to you.

An additional suggestions to his:
-If system is set to boot from a removable media rather than the hard
drive, remove the media.

Yes I have tried starting Windows with all the different start modes, but
none work. Having looked at the link you sent me it seems as though its a
damaged file system, and i'll get the Windows CD to fix it.

Thanks.

On the point of windows XP not loading, my computer did an automatic
update last night and afterwards asked me to restart the computer.
When I rebooted it will get to the "windows is starting up" screen and will
reset and reboot itself and this keeps on repeating. How do I make it stop
and get it working right.

I'm having a similar problem with my computer... but the blue screen flashes
and then goes away so fast that I can't read whats on it... but it then takes
me back to the "we apologize" screen again and again after trying to start
again.

I am having the same problem with one of my computers. It doesn't matter if
I do safe mode, last know good configuration or start windows normally.
Anyone out there that has an idea, let us know!
