I have Inspiron 9100 Dell notebook (several years old) with the full version
of Vista. Sound cues confirm it is loading when the computer is first turned
on; the screen remains black. I shut down the computer and try again. This
time a prompt appears and I choose "Start Windows Normally." Vista loads in
all its colorful glory and we're off to the races. Why won't Windows load
normally the first time, I wonder?

Because your video adapter may be faulty. With notebooks, this means a
technician as they are integrated into the motherboard and frequently this
requires replacing the whole unit.
