windows won't boot

Need some help. When booting machine running win xp home, I reach the user
login screen, click my user icon and it goes nowhere. Under the icon it will
briefly say loading user settings (or some such) and then changes to say
saving systen settings and the screen stays. It will not load all the way to
windows. Have tried opening in safe mode but get the same thing. Have run a
windows repair install and it still is not fixed. Any help would be
appreciated. Thanks.

A friend had a similar problem - only fix was to reinstall Windows - in his
case repair whas not an option.
