windows won't boot

Just started happening ... running windows xp home on an ibm thinkpad. All
was working well and now windows won't boot. Comes up to blank black screen.
Have booted to windows cd in hopes of running recovery console, but after
choosing the drive to repair, system locks up and goes no further. Will not
boot to last known good configuration nor will it boot to safe mode. Anyone
have any ideas before a reformat and lose all. Thanks!
