Windows will not start

I turn the pc on, power indicator lights up, sounds as if it is going to
start but screen remains blank. Laptop was fine one minute then gone the
next. I was just on the internet checking mail, then it went. No spyware
removed or any changes made at that time. Worked fine the night before. CD
recovery does not start either. Any suggestions, thanks.

This sounds like your laptop has had severe hardware failure. Contact
the laptop mftr.'s tech support for your next step.

Assuming you don't have any CD's or floppies in the system, it sounds like
your computer needs to go to the shop. A motherboard or memory failure will
cause this.

Try switching the video modes on the laptop. It is usually the function key
and f5 or f4... The key should have a picture of a monitor on it.
Or can you hook an external monitor up to the laptop? This will help you
determine if the problem is hardware. If the screen comes up on the external
monitor, it could be a lid switch that is stuck, or bad lcd.

Hi mtjoyhero,

Question, if you hook up the laptop to an external monitor do you see
anything? You may have a bad display.

Also, you may want to take the battery out and startup with just the
powersupply.

I have tried hooking the laptop up to a tv, but there is nothing. Startup
does not complete. it as far as i can assume, gets to the point before the
windows logo appears. Any ideas on what I can do to it?

If you can get to a DOS prompt, function F8, try chkdsk /r

If you have the XP cd you can try to repair it. Start the install as
normally you would. When you get to the part asking which partion to install
XP on you should see the option "R" for repair.

I'm not sure about the TV. I don't know whether Svideo will output before
Windows starts up. Anyone have info on this?
