Windows did not start successfully

Tuesday night when shutting down I installed the 13 updates. Wednesday when
I went to start my computer I had a message stating:

Windows did not start successfully. I could either continue Windows
normally or last working way, or safe mode. Any of the options I try does
not work.

If I clink on open Windows normally it goes to a blue screen that says:

A problem has been dectected and windows has been shut down to prevent
damage to your computer.

Normally you can boot to safe mode and do a restore to an earlier date, but
if safe mode doesn't work, then I suggest a repair install, as it appears the
updates are not compatable with your system.

I just experienced the same problem. None of the reboot options work. The
screen keeps trying to reboot every 30 seconds depending on the option chosen
(Safe Mode, Safe w/Networking, Safe w/Command Prompt, Last known Good
Configuration, Start Windows Normally), but nothing is working and the same
screen reappears. The answer below is not helpful. Have you any success
elsewhere? I'm stymied!

The problem is a software incompatability. deal with it as you may. but a
repair install may be your only fix, since it won't boot to windows.

OK, would you be so kind as to provide some details. I don't know what a
repair install entails. Thanks.

Boot to the install cd, (do not format) when the cd boots it will find the
existing install of windows and offer to repair it, select yes. you will have
to reapply your service packs and security patches, be sure to have your
activation key on hand.

Did a repair install but not with the original disk. Process gets us to blue
welcome screen but then MS doesn't authorize. Is there a way around this?

My computer could not start after trying to install KB971486, one of
the recent Windows updates. The error message was: ntoskrnl.exe
missing or corrupt. I was able to put ntoskrnl.exe and and
ntkrlpa.exe back to the folder Windows\System32 with a UBCD4Win and my
computer is back!! Those two exe files were missing because the
installation and un-installation of KB971486 both failed.

ntoskrnl.exe and ntkrlpa.exe back to the folder Windows\System32 with
a UBCD4Win and my computer is back!! Those two exe files were deleted
when the installation and un-installation of KB971486 both failed. I
am glad I did not have to go through lengthy procedure to get my
computer back.
