Windows XP start failure

My computer is over 5 years old, but working well. I have all the service
packs, most recent updates, and McAfee antivirus. I accidently hit the power
button one night and now...

When my computer starts it automatically goes to the screen that says
We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully.
A recent hardware or software change may have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was
automatically shut down to protect yor files, choose Last Known Good
Configuration.\

If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or
because the Power or Rest button was pressed or if you aren't sure what
caused the problem, choose Start Windows normally."

When I try start normally or last good configuration it briefly starts
loading, than the BSoD shows briefly, than it returns to the original error
screen. If I try to enter any of the safemodes, it starts to boot, than gets
to line.
:multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\windows\system32\drivers
mup.sys.

Than it goes back to the original failure to start screen.

I was hoping that someone could please set me in the right direction towards
fixing this.

Boot up with your XP cd
and from the recovery console issue the command chkdsk /r

your problem was caused by your hitting the power button, most likely it
caused a disk parity error, and the only way to recover from it, is repair
the disk by the chkdsk program ie boot with the windows install cd and
choose the repair console, hopefully you did install it.
or perform a repair install, if you can read the hd once you've booted from
the Install cd.

Hi mdmcguire55,

From the looks like it, one of the easiest solution for you would be to
recover the system by using the XP installation CD. one of my guesses would
be that you accidentally pressed the power button at a really bad timing
(e.g. during boot time hard disk check, or defrag). On of the option for
doing recovery from the CD does not erase your existing data, perhaps you
could do this option.

hope this helps,
