Windows Vista Starting up

I have just upgraded to windows vista from windows xp
When i start my computer it askes me whether i would like to start xp or
recovery mode is this normal

Would i been better doin a clean install

It's not normal, but you need to provide more info. What is the system and
configuration? How did you do the upgrade, what exactly happens when the
system is booted? What screens are displayed, where in the boot up process
does this message appear?
