I saw that page but since I don't like becoming a "member" of any
site, regardless of whether or not the process is free, I refrained
from going through the process.

No problem with Atguard running and the universal login details, but I
do appreciate your sentiments.

Without presenting this in the EULA, Billie and company have decided
In the past I've contended that MS does this sort of thing (makes unrelated changes to your system when you install a "patch" or "update") and I've been called paranoid. This is the second such documented nonrelated change that I've become aware of (the other was a removal of certain symbols from a font) resulting from installation of an MS "patch" and I'm not even looking for proof of this behavior.
I continue in my refusal to "update" my system with MS "patches". IMO the fact that MS continues to become more and more aggressive in their belief that they have a right to control and alter YOUR system, YOUR property, and to monitor your behavior like some out of control government agency, is the direct result of their being (again, IMO) a monopoly.

What turned me off Microsoft completely was when I did an upgrade,
only to discover that the upgrade software had deactivated my copy
of Word 2000 without asking my permission or giving me any
options. The software determined, to its own satisfaction, that I
was running a Beta copy, and even though the Beta copy didn't have
any time limit built into it, the software rendered it inoperable.
As far as I was concerned, that was it for Microsoft. I haven't
bought another Microsoft product and don't ever intend to. I hope
Microsoft goes belly up and Gates ends up selling pencils on the
street corner.

Just curious -- but did you try reinstalling the Beta after it was
disabled? If so, with what result?

He'd probably make another squillion -- have you priced pencils
lately? ;-)

Cheers, Phred.
