Talk about dumb and stupid advice. One of the reasons the update is
still at the manufacturer is because it has NOT been tested and
approved by MS. My advice stands. Don't update unless necessary. Get
your updates from MS after they have been approved. You are a self
anointed spreader of bad advice not moderator. WAKE UP.

ROFL! Please go ahead and use Windows Update to update your video
drivers. You deserve them.

Would you care to give me a known problem and the fix from a manufacturer.
Lets talk facts here not emotional BS. I suppose you even use antivirus
programs??

I am not referring to known problems and/or fixes.
I am referring to the fact that the drivers created by Microsoft are, as
Kurt said, generic in nature and not designed for the specific hardware in
most cases. If they ae then they are basically the same as the ones on the
manufacturers website. The manufacturer will have the most updated drivers
available and this should be obvious to anybody who decides to apply a
little logic.

And if your tellng me that I am wrong for using antivirus programs then I
won't even bother to respond to anymore communication you bother to post in
this thread because that is completely ridiculous.

When the driver exist at Nvidia they are always superior to those from MS, the
MS version is something "lite", i.e.: it's not optimize for full peek
performance, that's why I always use those from Nvidia

BTW. when you use the MS and then upgrade to Nvidia's own, the driver reappear
on the list of the Windows Update

Thank you in Advance

They are not 'generic' in nature. They are obtained from the manufacturer.
Microsoft then tests them in as many configurations as possible. They then
become 'signed' drivers.
There are many devices in existance that manufacturers have no intensions of
updating to the XP level. Microsoft in this case keeps those drivers to
support old hardware. Perhaps that is what you are referring to.
And if you tell me you're using virus scanners that is the tipoff that you
have no programming experience and lack in overall computer knowledge.
Ridiculous you say?? Why don't you delete all your virus programs, use common
sense and see how a computer should run. There are far more (magnitudes) of
problems caused by virus detect programs than problems prevented. Once again
you speak with emotion rather than fact.

That is very true but, in your posts and post responses you leave the
impression that what you're saying is fact.

M

Michael Solomon \(MS-MVP Windows Shell/User\)

There's a known issue between XP and Creative (Sound Blaster) sound cards,
most notably the SB Live generation of cards, wherein users will receive a
delvdr error when shutting down their computers; the updated drivers from
the Creative website resolve the issue.

There's known issue between Roxio's Easy CD Creator 5 and XP wherein after
installation, upon rebooting the system, users will receive a notice that
the Direct CD component is not compatible with XP and has been disabled.
Updates from the Roxio website resolve the issue.

That's two right there.

To be clear, the drivers at Windows Update are supplied by the device
manufacturer's as is the case for the drivers that ship with XP. Typically,
these drivers are minimalist and don't usually support all the functions of
the device. I'm guessing the reason for this is space on the CD as the
fuller featured versions are typically much larger. Drivers distributed at
Windows Update are the same class of drivers as found on the XP CD but later
versions which might also be included in later versions of the OS.

Some do work just fine but often the drivers at Windows Update are outdated
because not every new iteration of device driver ends up at Windows Update.
Some don't work so well. First, they are not subjected to the same rigorous
testing across the wide install base tested when the OS is in beta. Second,
Sometimes integrated features supported by the drivers direct from the
manufacturer's websites includes code that supports the primary drivers and
when that code is not included, depending upon setup and demands from the
user as in what else is installed that might use the drivers, systems can
become unstable, crash or have other issues as a result.

It's a fact the latest nVidia driver on nVidia's web site, have passed
WHQL testing, and is a newer version than what is being hosted by MS.

A very balanced and fair assestment and explanation about the drivers on
