Windows Update broke our XP Home Edition

Yesterday my son responded the the Windows Update popup
notification and attempted to install whatever it was that
Microsoft indicated we needed. Our WinXP machine will now
not start, hanging up at Winlogon.exe Entry Point Not
Found - Procedure AssocIsDangerous could not be found in
the dynamic link library SHLWAPI.DLL. Our computer was
bought 2 years ago from Compaq, and the Restore CD that
came with it only offers the chance to go back to factory
condition. I have booted the machine with Knoppix 3.3, and
find that the file dates for shell32.dll and shlwapi.dll
differ from those for msgina.dll and winlogon.exe, which
in turn are the same as the dates for all four files in
the directory servicepackfiles\i386. Unfortunately for me,
Knoppix 3.3 is unable to write to the ntfs, so I will keep
searching for either a Win XP boot disk that truly
provides Restore, or a version of Linux that handles
writing to the ntfs. By the time I get Win XP back to
life, I will probably know enough more about Linux that I
will be ready to jump OS ship, despite my sons' desire to
play games written for Windows.
URRGGHHH!!!!

1) Boot disks are exactly that - disks that allow the system to boot.
None contain repair tools. If you want the ability to repair you will need
to purchase a retail licence.

2) No version of Linux supports writing to NTFS.

Hi George,

This error generally comes from a bad SP1 install. To uninstall you need to
do a repair install.

Have you tried pressing F5, booting into safe mode and
removing windows updates from add and remove? Or won't it
get that far?

You guessed it - no safe mode. All roads lead to the
winlogon error, no way around it with what Compaq sold me.

My son wasn't sure what Windows Update wanted to do, but
what I've read since yesterday sounds like the bad SP1
install problem is now my problem! My current hangup is
finding a nearby source for repair install. It just annoys
me no end to think of going out and buying another copy of
Win XP or further upgrade just so I can get one with
complete restore and repair functions rather than just the
Restore to Factory Version that is what I have now.

Try F8 to get into safe mode.
"Then select Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings
that worked)"

The following isn't essential.
Re initiate the 832894 update but do not reboot, then go into
<start> <settings> <control panel> <add/remove programs> and select
the 832894 update and select remove. It will still show up in the
add/remove programs unless you do this and you won't be able to remove
the reference.
This at least may put you back to where you were before the update.
I've stuck with 824145 for now.

Hope this helps.

I've got a fix that will work GREAT and it won't cost a DIME!! I didn'
want to post it here, until I tried it out on the box that I was havin
trouble with first. It fixed the problem and I lost no information a
all! Here goes:

First you'll need either your windows XP build CD, or if you don't hav
one you can follow the steps in this lin
"http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...FamilyID=E8FE6868-6E4F-471C-B455-BD5AFEE126D8
to create 6 startup disks for your computer. Once you have used the
startup disks on the computer with the problem you will be at a poin
where you can press "R" to "repair a previous installation of windows"
Leave disk 6 in and the computer will restart to a c:\windows prompt
Once you are here type in "CHKDSK /R" then, if you have not alread
done so replace the 2 dll files that are called for in the error boxes
Restart the computer, with no floppies or CD's in the drive. Tha
should be it and you should have no more problems. Drop me an email i
it didn't work out good for you: (e-mail address removed)
