Tried to restore msgina.dll but no adm password

Hi,
I installed IE, ver 6 - SP1 on XP-home.
Restarted the PC and got 3 error msgs in regard of
Winlogon.exe, Services.exe, and Isass.exe - Entry point
not found. "The procedure entry point
AssocGetPerceivedType could not be located in the dynamic
link library SHLWAPI.dll. It then displayed another error
msg indicating that "The logon User Interface DLL
msgina.dll failed to load. Contact your Sys-Adm to replace
the DLL, or restore the original dll".

I booted up from CD-ROM and got into restore session, but
it asked for the administrator password inwhich that I
have forgotten. So, I am stuck and could not get help from
MS support.

Is my only-option to reinstall Win-XP? If I reinstalled
Win-XP, will I lose all the data in my own private folders?

Thanks,

Chris

there is a way to fix this
hold up, I'll give you the instructions rite quick
If you cannot remember your admin password, I am sorry, I don't think anyone
will be able to help. Try to "google" for "resettiing win Xp admin passwords"
and you might find something that helps

*** Resolution ***

"Winlogon.exe. Entry Point Not Found The procedure entry point
AssocIsDangerous

could not be found in the dynamic link library SHLWAPI.DLL."

You can only reboot after that.

1. Boot to Recovery Console.

2 . type the following commands
cd system32 [enter]

ren winlogon.exe winlogon.old
ren msgina.dll msgina.old
ren shell32.dll shell32.old
ren shlwapi.dll shlwapi.old

cd .. [enter]
cd servicepackfiles\i386 [enter]
copy MSGINA.DLL c:\windows\system32
copy SHELL32.DLL c:\windows\system32
copy WINLOGON.EXE c:\windows\system32
copy shlwapi.dll c:\windows\system32

if not there, expand from the cd

3 Type EXIT and hit enter

Good luck

Thank you for your suggested instructions. However, you
are required to have Sys-Adm password to logon to the
restore session and, then, executing those instructions.
Thus, w/o Sys-adm password you can not get on to the
restore procedures.

Thanks,

Chris

Assume the password is blank. If that doesn't work see this link:
