I accepted one of the Windows Updates via the Windows
Update notification tool. After installation and reboot.
My XP is HOSED!! :( It totally ruined my PC now Microsoft
wants to charge me for support!! WHY?? it was their
software update that caused the problem!!!

Did you not write down which critical update it was?
Can you not uninstall it with Add/Remove programs?
Have you tried a System Restore to a date before you installed the update?
 
I am currently looking into this same problem for a
friend and would appreciate any help I can get. She
recently downloaded the Wed July 17th Update and after
reboot computer simply stalls and will not open anything,
cannot run virus scans, get online, nothing. This update
must have cuased an error somewhere that should be
fixable once identified. As a professional accountant
wiping it and starting over is NOT an option.
 
Try to boot to Safe Mode and uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs
in the Control Panel . If you can not do that :
