Windows Security Center Problems

T

TexasRed

I just installed Security Suite and the Windows Security Center does not
recognize it. When I go to view it it states the FireWall and Virus
Protection are not found. I have re-booted and checked for other Security
Suites on the system. I am running Windows XP SP3. Has anyone experienced
this and was was done to correct the problem? Any suggestions would be
greatly appreciated..

Just "Security Suite"? No mftr. like Norton or McAfee? Without knowing more
specifics, all I can do is assume you've installed some fairly obscure
software that Windows Security Center doesn't recognize. If you are sure
it's a good program and you want to use it, you can tell Windows Security
Center that you'll monitor the antivirus yourself.

I have tried both Webroot and Trend. Are there any Suites better than those?

Exactly *which* security suite have you installed?

By the way, I am against using any security suite, since you can
always do better by selecting the best products of each type, rather
than letting the Suite manufacturer make the choices for you.

I don't like either of those, but Security Center should recognize Trend
antivirus. Webroot Spysweeper isn't an antivirus so I wouldn't expect it to
be recognized.

What is the malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is clean,
what programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?

Be sure the computer is clean:

Thank you for the information. But if you had to recommend an Internet Security Suite since you are not impressed with Trend and Webroot.

TexasRed, I am not into Security Suites, as such. They try to be everything
to everybody, and end up as half-baked, bloated software, which hogs your
computer's resources.

Smaller, seperate Programs for particular jobs is a better way to go.

Below is a list of the combination that I use, in XP and Vista.

Windows Firewall is good to use for protection.

http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

Avast Anti-Virus is XP and Vista compatible (32bit and 64bit Versions),
FREE, auto-updating, and a low resources user of your computer.
And, only have 1(one) Anti-Virus installed / running on your computer at any
one time..
Conflicts may occur if you have more than 1(one).

http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html

Spybot Search & Destroy 1.6 is a very good, FREE Anti-Spyware Program.
Download, install, update, and immunize your System with it.
Then SCAN with it.
Update it, and scan your System once a fortnight.

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

SpywareBlaster 4.1 is a non-intrusive, FREE Anti-Spyware Program (no
scanning by you!).
SpywareBlaster prevents the installation of many so-called spyware, adware
and malware programs by disabling the CLSIDs of popular spyware ActiveX
controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage
Update it once a fortnight.

Malwarebytes is as the name says, a Malware Remover!
For the Free version scroll down their page to either download from
Download.com, or Major Geeks.com

And whatever Anti-virus, or Security Suite, you have installled, uninstall it
before attempting to install another one.

I don't like security suites at all, but one of my clients wanted one so I
installed NOD32 Smart Security and was quite pleased at how light on system
resources it is. NOD32 Antivirus is the commercial av I recommend and their
Smart Security suite is also good.

Make sure your computer is virus/malware-free and the Trend/SpySweeper
programs are uninstalled before you attempt to install a new antivirus or
security suite.
