I have not turned on Automatic Windows Update. Nonetheless, apparently
something I allowed to download and install from Microsoft had put that
little red shield icon with the white X thru it into my tray. I believe this
is called the Windows Security Alert Icon. Can anyone tell me how to get rid
of it, either by registry edit, or removal of whatever MS software download
installed it, or any other means. This icon just drive me nuts with its
constant reminders, but just have not found how to delete it. Please help,
someone! Thanks in advance. Bill T.

1. Go to Start > Run and type: SERVICES.MSC , and hit enter.
2. Scroll down to SECURITY CENTER.
3. Right-click on this service and select Properites.
4. Set the Startup type to Disabled.
5. Afterward, Stop the service.
