removal from system tray

My computer came with an icon for Dell Support Alerts in the system tray.
I've tried to get rid of it the usual way, by right-clicking on the icon,
and looking for Properties--but the only options on a right-click are View
Alerts, Alert Settings, and Exit. If I click Exit, the icon disappears; but
it pops up again at the next boot-up or after 24 hours.

I have a Windows XP computer with SP3 installed. Is there a relatively
simple way to delete this icon from the tray?

How to use Msconfig:

Look for an entry in the 'Startup' tab that is associated with Dell Support.

If you want to dig deeper or can not find it using msconfig then:
Try Autoruns from the MS Windows SysInternals site:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx

AutoRuns will show/list all apps/etc. that load/run when you first boot
(Boot Execute tab),
when you logon (Logon tab) and other programs that load (grouped by labeled
tabs) for easy viewing.

It also provides the ability to selectively allows you to stop (use with
care) any program that you don't want to load. You can undo any changes you
have made.

Note: To get additional details on an item in the list you may need to
highlight the item (right click) and use the 'Search Online' option to get
the details, especially useful for the more obscure items in the list.

Look in your Startup folder or Start > Run msconfig > Startup and uncheck
the item in question.

Thank you both! I did it, using msconfig (I had to widen the column to see
which item belonged to Dell). Now I should at least look at some of the
other startup items there. I don't recognize a few of them.

Hi, Ed,

I didn't want to remove the program, just stop it from starting up when I
boot the computer. Got it done with help from here!

You may also want to look in the Services tab via Msconfig. Hide MS then
view the rest. Another method is going to Start/Run: services.msc
