windows picture and fax viewer displays unwanted images

When picture attachments are sent to me via email, they open with windows pic
and fax viewer. When I use the left and right scroll buttons, I also view
pics that are from a 'temporary internet files' folder that I can't find with
windows explorer.

If I right click one of these rogue pics and look at properties, I see the
path is...

C/Documents and Settings/My Name/Local Settings/Temporary Internet
Files/Content.IE5/HUDBSU (The last element of the path is always some random
set of letters)

I cannot find anything named 'Content.IE5' in this path. I have made sure
to unclick all the 'hidden' boxes in the path. I also come up empty when
searching on the file name on the entire disk drive. I usually know how to
find things in the Windows file system, but for some reason, the pic and fax
viewer is finding stuff i can't find using windows explorer and displaying
them albiet unauthorized.

BTW, I'm using Win XP with SP2.

thanks, ron

The following works for me...

Any image you view on the internet or in
an e-mail message has to be downloaded
before you can see it on your screen...these
files are in your Temporary Internet Files folder.

First, open any folder and go to...Tools / Folder
Options / View tab...

At, "Hidden Files and Folders" tick..."Show
Hidden Files and Folders" / Apply / OK.

Next...right click your Start button and choose...Explore...

In your file tree go to...Local Disk C:/Documents
and Settings/Your Name/Local Settings/Temporary
Internet Files...

Open your "Temporary Internet Files" folder and
delete everything in it. Just go to...Edit / Select
All / File / Delete...Yes.

I also empty my History folder, Temp Folder And
Recent folder.

Have a look at the following article:

Temporary Internet Files Folder

John,

I've already done all the things you've mentioned. I just did them again to
verify. My viewer continues to display rogue images, referencing a path that
doesn't exist using windows explorer.

- This is happening when viewing email picture attachments using MSN8. This
does not happen when viewing pics out of a folder in the file system.
- The path to the folder that doesn't exist is Documents and Settings/My
Name/Local Settings/Temporary Internet Files/Content.IE5 (Hmm, interesting
that IE5 gets referenced when I'm using MSN8)
- The Temporary Internet Files Folder is there, but there is no Content.IE5
sub-folder in it and that's where the viewer is saying it's getting the pics
from.
- The 'hidden' box is not checked.

There are actually two issues here...
- Why won't windows explorer find files that can be found by the viewer?
- Why does the viewer want to display unwanted pics?

You might want to say "Don't use MSN8", but that still doesn't answer the
question of where those pictures are actually residing on my disk drive.
They are definitely the kind of content you would find in a "Temporary
Internet Files" folder.

I hope this helps to clarify my problem. I've searched the web and haven't
found anyone else who has experienced this.

thanks, ron

If your Temporary Internet Files folder is
empty...I mean *nothing in it*...that's all I
know to do.

Maybe it would be worth a try to run Disk
Cleanup...

(310312) Description of the Disk Cleanup
Tool in Windows XP

Also the following freebie has been quite
useful to me for keeping temp files deleted.

Sorry, I have no info on MSN 8. Maybe
there are settings that can be changed
on the MSN website.

I just accessed this site for the first time with the same issue described
here. Picture attachments on emails that I access with both Outlook and
Outlook Express that are associated with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer
contain images from the "Temporary Internet Files" folder (on a path that, as
described already, cannot be accessed). Deleting all Temporary Internet
Files and Cookies through "Tools" on the "General" tab of IE only temporarily
fixes the problem. If I go to just one web site after performing the action,
then the unwanted images (albeit different ones) return. My question is why
the picture and fax viewer is displaying these in the first place. Can this
action be curtailed? (types of images that are being displayed are graphics
from web sites, pictures from sites).

That's the way it works...when you open an
image directly from an e-mail message it
opens in your Temporary Internet Files folder...

Once you are in the Temporary Internet Files
folder...you can scroll through all images it
contains.

If you prefer not to see the Temporary files...
save the e-mail images to a folder on your
hard drive and view them from there.

OK, that makes sense that when scrolling through pics that are attached to an
email, I would also see pics in the Temp Int Files folder.

There's still an unanswered question though. Why am I not able to find the
folder that these pics are coming from? I see them even though my Temp Int
Files folder is empty. The path name given for these pics is ...Temporary
Internet Files/Content.IE5/....
I have no folder with "Content.IE5" in the pathname. Yet it seems to exist
and has pictures in it.

I don't know...maybe you need to open
a folder and go to...Tools / Folder Options /
View tab...Tick...Show Hidden Files and Folders.

Is this the path you are navigating?
C:\Documents and Settings\>username<\
Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

John,

The pathname is as you say. I checked again, and I am indeed not hiding
folders. Go figure!
I'm wondering if you can duplicate this on your machine. Send yourself a
picture attachment via email; clear your Temp Int File folder and see if you
can view pics that aren't supposed to be on your machine when using Windows
Pic and fax viewer to look at them.

No, when I do it...I can clear my TIF folder
and eliminate the unwanted files.

Actually, I empty my temp files several
times daily using the following freebie.

I just asked that question and got the right answer. Those images are in a
folder called OLK with some numbers after it. Do a search, and make sure you
check "search hidden files" and "search subfolders" and type in OLK*. It
will show you the OLK folder. Click on it, and check to view images as
thumbnails and you will find them all there. You can select them and delete
them, then empty your trash folder.

Sorry, but that's already been offered
in this thread and it did not work for
carguy.

Here's a link if you need it later.
