Windows Media Player files won't play

Why does WMA files not play in most CD players (car, home audio, portable)?

Do I need to convert a WMA file into a MP3 file in order for it to work in
the above mentioned players? Is it even possible to do this?

The formats are not the same, so if the player is not meant for WMA a
conversion will be necessary.
