Windows Mail times out receiving mail

HI,
I'm just setiing up a brand new machine with Vista and have configured
Windows Mail with one account. When Windows Mail goes to receive mail it see
the messages, seems to stall until POP timeout setting then asks "Your POP3
mail server has not responded. Do you want to wait?"

Preseeing wait just repeats that cycle. Pressing stop then says "download
cancelled"
I've switched off firewall and anti virus, no change.

The same settings work on another machine in Outlook Express.

Any ideas pelase?

Define what you mean by "switched off" with respect to your antivirus.
If your antivirus is McAfee or Norton, Windows Mail will often
malfunction until you completely uninstall the non-compatible antivirus.

Hi Gary,
Thanks for your reply. I wondered whether it might have been security
software. Originally the machine came with preinstalled Norton. The Windows
Mail problem was present. I've uninstalled Norton, still had the problem,
and installed CA Internet Security Suite, still have the problem, tried
disabling CA ISS and still have the problem.

Recreate that mail account in Windows Mail, then delete the
old account. Sometimes Norton corrupts accounts, and the
corruption is not repaired by simply uninstalling Norton.

Hi Gary,
Thank you, I had already tried that.
Originally I setup the two email accounts for the user (I'm setting this
machine up for someone else) and saw I could send email but could not POP
retrieve email as per the original post, i.e., timeout waiting for POP3
server.

Before posting today I disabled the two previous accounts and created a
brand new account from my own mail server. Brand new account works fine on
an XP machne with OE, yet this Windows Vista / Windows Mail machine still
gets the POP3 timeout message. Sends ok, goes to receive, see how many mail
messages to download (1 in this case) flashes about one fifth of the way into
the bar than back to zero and nothing until timeout message.

Where to now?

OK, we've tried the simpler possibilities, so let's try one of the rarer
ones. Some older servers get confused by Vista's autotuning feature.
1. Click on the Vista start orb and type cmd
2. The search results will display a program named cmd.exe
3. Right-click on the link and select "Run as administrator"
4. After the command prompt window opens, type
"netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled" without
the quotation marks, then press Enter.
5. Test your POP account and see if you can download your mail now.
6. If nothing changes, re-enable the autotuning feature by typing
"netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=normal"

That did the trick. Thank you. Wonder why autotune was stopping receiving
ANY emails? Anwho, all done now.

Sorry about the double post, finger problems. Just wanted to give a big
thanks for the information on this forum. I've spent the past 3 days, pulling
hair, removing virus programs and changing settings to fix my windows mail
receive problem. After reading this forum and taking the advice offered, my
problem is fixed. Again, many thanks, I can probably sleep tonight :)

Would this problem tend to be "all or nothing"? I have had similar problems,
but some emails have downloaded successfully, while others will not.

It tends to be "all or nothing" for a given server. That said, some of the
larger ISPs have a bank of servers all answering to the same alias, so
it could be like Russian roulette if you get a bad one sometimes.
