Windows Mail EMail Messages Lock-Up

G

Guest

I recently purchased a new computer with Windows VISTA and Windows Mail. I
open Windows Mail. I open 10 or 15 email messages. I open another email
messages and all I see is the outline of the message, with no message. I can
close the message. I try opening other email messages and it does the same
thing. I can close Windows Mail and I can still brose with Internet
Explorer. I go back into Windows Mail and the first message I try to open, I
get the outline again with no message. This happens every time I work with
Windows Mail after opening 10 or 15 messages. The only way I can get Windows
Mail to work again is to reboot the system and go back into Windows Mail. I
can then open 10 to 15 emails and the same thing starts to happen again. I
got McAfee Security Center installed. I heard that you can use Microsoft
Outlook with Windows VISTA. Has anyone tried using Microsoft Outlook with
VISTA? Dell told me you could not use Outlook Express with VISTA. About the
only answer I got from Dell is to uninstall Windows VISTA which incluedes
Windows Mail. If I do this it will also delete everything I have on they
system, including all my folders, pictures, etc. If I can help it, I don't
want to do this. Any suggestions?

Outlook Express won't run under Vista. Outlook will, if it's version 2003
or later

McAfee antivirus products often interfere with Windows Mail, so you might
try uninstalling the McAfee product. If you want a replacement antivirus
product, avoid Norton and Trend, which have similar problems. In other
antivirus products, turn off email scanning, which can also cause problems.

Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. Also exclude EML
files from the scan. It provides no
protection not provided by the regular resident protection.
Besides that, McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail and
Outlook Express and should be uninstalled.

I will turn off email scanning in the McAfee Secuirty Center to see if this
helps the problem. I have an annual contract with McAfee on their security
suite and if it's a McAfee problem, then McAfee needs to update their
software to fix the problem. If it is McAfee, I can contact them to see if
they can provide a fix. Just to completely delete the McAfee Security Center
and download another program I don't believe right now is my fix.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download
and install a more compatible antivirus like the free Avast:

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their
email scanning option turned off. For more on this topic see

You can, however, temporarily uninstall it, as a test.
It is the only way to be sure to rule out McAfee as the culprit.

I temporarily disabled the McAfee email scan of messages. This didn't help.
The first time I went back into Windows Mail, the mail hang-up happended
again.

As I've stated here many times, just disabling McAfee and Norton is not
sufficient. Those programs must be uninstalled in order to remove all
their strangling tentacles.

I have been working in the newsgroups with OE for more than ten years and
McAfee has been the most consistent at causing problems with OE. It has to
be uninstalled, not just disabled. And Norton is almost as bad.

I completely removed the McAfee Security Center. Also I went to the McAfee
Site and downloaded a .exe file and this also completely removed all remnants
of any McAfee files. After running this I reloaded the McAfee Security
Center. Since I loaded it (four days now), I have only had one freeze and
that was right after I reloaded the McAfee Security Center. Before when I
had one I had to reboot, this time I had to exit Windows Mail and when I
immediately went back into Windows Mail immediately without rebooting, I
could read my email. I have not had any freezes in over three days.

we did exactly the same thing as Richard D - What a hassle, down three days!
now the other user can use his Hotmail and print - all the other programs
can print but when I try and print an email in Windows Mail the program
locks up and to continue i have to reboot. Any ideas??

You stated that you were suprised that I reinstalled such a problematic
program as McAfee. I have an annual renewal contract with McAfee on their
Security products. Also new Dell PC's have the option when you buy their PC
to include McAfee security products with them. Since I de-installed and then
re-installed the McAfee Security Center I have had one instance of email
freezing. And then all I had to do was exit Windows Mail and immediately go
back into it instead of having to reboot the system like I had to do before.
I do believe that sooner or later that McAfee will get this problem fixed
with one of their updates. With now just having to exit Mail and immediately
go back into it to fix the freeze, I can live with that. I have had a lot
worst problems. Maybe the problem of having to reboot to fix the freeze mail
problem will start again and if it does I will probably have to go back and
think about other options.

You have a lot higher tolerance for program misbehavior than I do!
I would not accept the workaround of having to close and reopen a
program due to occasional freezes.

If McAfee needs several iterations to get it right, then they have a
bunch of incompetent programmers. I also read that one of their
recent updates caused a lot of people to lose their Internet
connection!

I don't know what happened but I have not had a hang-up since probably mid
November. I get updates from McAfee every day and maybe one of their updates
fixed the problem. I wish though that when a company did fix something with
an update they would notify you, but I guess that is what they call modern
technology, (figure it out yourself).

Companies like McAfee and Norton are very mum about admitting
screw-ups. When an update fixes a prior screw-up, they still won't
disclose what the update does.
