Windows Login won't default to last user

We have two Windows XP Professional machines that won't retain the last user
name that logged in as the default user. On one machine it actually defaults
to a user that has been renamed in the user accounts and through control
panel, administrative tools, computer management, local users. It is just an
aggravation to have to change the user on the login screen every time. Any
ideas?

How to turn on/off last user name display via group policy editor:

Under the following registry key you can find things like the default
user name/domain that will show up the next time you log in. You may
need to tinker some of these settings:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

If the following value exists, try setting it to 0 instead of 1:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon
\DontDisplayLastUserName
