Problem with Default User not generating user profiles ?

MaldenC

I have recently reloaded windows xp to my Dell Latitude laptop. Everything
appears to be working fine. I am in the process of trying to set up my
Default User profile so that all users to this computer get the same profile
when they login. I am able to connect to the school Domain using the
Administrator id. I have a "teststud" id we use to create a default profile
that is applied to all user accounts that login to the school computers. I
have logged into the domain as the teststud and set up the profile as I need
it ( added printer, set up desktop, set to classic view etc.). I then
restarted the computer and logged back in as administrator and copied the
teststud profile to default user in Documents and settings. Then restarted
again.

Problem: everytime I login to a user account I do not get the default
profile that I created under teststud. I have been messing with this for 3
days now and cannot understand what might be causing this problem on this
computer ? I have done this procedure 100's of times on other computers for
the school and have never encountered this problem ? Does anyone have any
suggestions on this topic ??? Thanks in advance...

You need to tell us *what* profile folder you actually get. You can find out
like this:
1. Create a test user account on the server.
2. Log on as Administrator on the problem workstation.
3. Create a semphore file in every profile folder, e.g.
c:\documents and settings\administrator\administrator.sema
c:\documents and settings\Malden\Malden.sem
Make sure to include the hidden profile folders!
4. Log on as the new test user. Which semaphore file does he get?

MaldenC,

Is it a RM network?

This is what I usually do & it works everytime

Backup the original Default Profile
Login as the user & setup printer & other resources as normal
Reboot & login as an admin
Delete the contents of the default user profile (not the folder itself)
Copy the contents of the profile created earlier into that folder
Go to: MY COMPUTER | PROERTIES | ADVANCED & click the USER PROFILES button
Delete the original user to create the default user
Log out & in as that user just deleted to see if the profile is created

Is it the same scenerio?

Sorry it took me so long to reply... meetings yesterday afternoon...
We have the following profiles in our Documents and setting folder...
Administrator
Administrator.Malden-35e40... local profile
Administrator.MCHS_DOMAIN School domain login profile
All Users
All Users.Windows (not sure why a .Windows ?)
Default User
Default User.Windows (not sure why a .Windows ?)

I did as you suggested and create a .sema file in each profile folder and
logged in as our test user account. The Default User.Windows sema file is
the one that appears now in the teststud profile folder. I suppose I could
correct my problem by editing my teststud profile and the copying to this
Default User.Windows profile ?
Would this be the best course of action ? What is causing the .Windows
profiles to be created and useed ? Does this need to be corrected ?

Thanks again

I don't know why Windows has a tendency to create profile folders with a
suffix in their names. Since Windows is currently using the folder "Default
User.Windows" as the basis for all new profiles, the simplest course of
action would be to accept the fact and taylor this folder to suit your
requirements.

I answered your question yesterday.

Could you re-post that answer as I do not see it in this list of postings
anywhere ?
The last post I had from you came 2 days ago and is stated as follows ...

I would like to know what to do with these .Windows profiles and how to get
my computer to return to using the Default User profile ?

Thanks

Google is your friend. I pasted this phrase from your reply into a Google
search box

"did as you suggested and create a .sema file"

and got this hit straight away:
http://www.pcbanter.net/showthread.php?p=3300440. Look for the word
"tendency" to see the reply you're missing.
