Windows is starting up.....then hangs

Hi
I have a laptop, it boots to the stage where it says windows is starting up then sits there. The mouse still moves around the screen but it doesnt boot any further
It boots fine into safe mode with networking, but not with command prompt, same problem
Ive disabled all the services that are not started when booting into safe mode with networking, and this gets me a stage further, and displays the network configuration message but then doesnt proceed
Any ideas before I flatten it?

Can you log in as another user successfully?

Nothing in event logs
Doesnt get as far as allowing login, hangs at Windows is starting up prompt.

Argle. When you go in via safe mode, what event log errors do you see?

Hi,
Please goto recovery console and disable all the third party services.
Recovery console shows all the services which you cannot see in safemode or
any other mode
to disable the service use DISABLE COMMAND

You can follow this artcile KB244905 for the use of DISABLE COMMAND
Please let me know what changes you made before this problem was arrived

Seems to be patch 835732 that causes the problem. SMS installs this then the machine show the symptoms described.
