This is not a chat room, it is a newsgroup which works a little bit
different. Responses/suggestions are given in no certain amount of time,
some come quickly while others may take a day or so. One problem is the
use of Microsoft's web based CDO which you are using. To make matters
easier I suggest you use an email/news reader instead. For info on how
see:
http://www.microsoft.com/Windows/IE/community/columns/newsgroups101.mspx

If your issue started after installing a Norton product, for simplicity I
will paste the suggested fix supplied to Charlie in this response if you
happen to find your way back.

If you did not install any Norton product, please advise us if you did
install/uninstall or anything else prior to the issue.

If you did not install/uninstall or anything else prior to the issue, you
either have corrupted video drivers or your machine has been compromised by
any of the viruses, adware, spyware, etc. that are out and about.
If this is the case you need to clean out the dirty laundry by first
running a full system virus scan that is fully up to date. Next it's time
to run the gauntlet.
**It is very important to run the update for each program before
running the app/s to be sure you have the latest definitions.**
Run the programs in Safe Mode after assuring you have shut down all running
tasks except explorer or systray and all apps are fully up to date.
Remove your Temp Internet files: Right click IE. Under the General tab
click Delete Files, put a check in Delete all Offline..., click OK and
close when finished.
Delete all files in c:\windows\temp.

Download/run Cool Web Shredder from:
http://www.intermute.com/products/cwshredder.html

For Info on Cool Web Search variants:
http://www.richardthelionhearted.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html

Download/install/run Ad-Aware SE to detect/rid of any other
parasites/spyware that may be installed. It can be obtained free from:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
After installing Ad-Aware, open it and click on the ref update to get the
latest up-to-date ref file, then run Ad-Aware and delete everything it
finds.

Download/install/run Spybot - Search & Destroy:
http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download
Run it at it's default settings until you learn an know more about it.
Spybot S&D is more of an advanced users tool and changing from the default
settings can be dangerous to the novice user. Items found in the default
settings that are RED can usually be safely removed. If you are unsure of a
found item, do not remove it and ask for help.

If you still have problems, download/run HijackThis from:
http://www.richardthelionhearted.com/~merijn/downloads.html
http://majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html

Copy HJT to it's own folder, this is where the log files will be saved.
Run HJT in Normal Mode.
Do not remove anything with it until you get advice on what to remove,
HJThis will list many apps that are needed along with the bad ones.
Removing items listed hap-hazardly without knowing what they are can/will
create a royal mess. Read the quick start here on how to create a log file
that can be copied/pasted into a forum that can provide assistance on
removal of unwanted pests.
http://mjc1.com/mirror/hjt/#quick

Then post the logs to an appropriate forum where they specialize in
spyware/hijacker removal. Please read any sticky notes for proper posting
which are most commonly posted first at the top in each specific forum.
Read any information under each forum category name for information on what
that particular one is used for, look for the proper one that you post logs
to.

http://aumha.net/
http://forum.aumha.org/

After running the above and assuring you have a clean machine:
It’s also a good idea to have a HOSTS file to block bad sites, scroll to
HOSTS File Manager here:
http://www.mvps.org/PracticallyNerded/Software.htm

Download/install/run SpywareBlaster which stops the badboys before they
even get a chance to install:

This is an email that the poster ccpatrick sent me. As I do not accept
private emails unless asked as most other require the same, I have notified
the poster that i would post their issue here for others to see.

Email from ccpatrick:
i followed how to ask a question on microsoft page...my computer will not
allow me to click on question and then to insert information in the subject
line.
i also went thru previous posting...it said to go to MsiInstaller...i
tried that and when i did a search ....nothing was found.
i have been trying to get this "windows installer" from popping up all
the time that i am on the internet using "e" (internet explorer)
i have called microsoft help desk and they told me to call my
manufacturer...hp pavilion desk top amd athlon (tm) xp 3200+ 2.20ghz,448 mb
of ram.
i called hp help desk and they told me to call microsoft.
i had a computer tech look at computer and he was here for over 10 hours
and charged me $700 and the problem still exists.
he could not find the problem.
he felt it was a program that is trying to install...but he could not
find it.
i was trying to go to the chat room so i could ask for assistance....but
my computer ...will not let me ask a question....according to microsoft i
am to click on ask a question ...then put info in ....my computer will not
allow me to do it.
and once again ...i looked at postings and the question was:
everytime i launch my application, windows installer performs an
installation. how can i determine the cause of the on-demand installation?
answer: an easy way to determine the cause of an on-demand installation
is to look in the application event log for MsiInstaller log messages of
the form:

i did this and when i went to search....my computer found nothing.
i currently have....microsoft xp home edition version 2002 service pack 2
my computer is : hp pavilion desk top amd athlon(tm) xp 3200+ 2.20
ghz,448 mb of ram.

any suggestions or should i just buy a new computer.
thank you for your time.

i did all the virus scans...no virus....i went to ...control panel and i
deleted any items i did not recognize...this stoppke the windows installer
from popping up....but now ....my system is telling me i have no windoes
installer....i went: start,manage,services & applications,services,windows
installer start....message reads: srvices: could not start the windows
installer service on local computer. error 3: the system cannot find the path
specified.

i believe i must have deleted the windows installer from the add/remove
programs section. i also believe i deleted something called "msiinstaller"
and i also beleive i deleted "winpointinstaller" (this is a calyx point
system mortgage companies use)...so now i do not have the windows installer
popping up every minute...but now i can not install anything...because my
computer tells me i have no windows installer....i also went to system
recovery and back dated my computer to an earlier time...i thought that might
help....but now
1. i can't install or download anything.( i tried to download all info from
last email so ex. windows installer info.) my computer tells me it can't do
it.
2.i can not open my calyx point software...it tells me
winpoint.ex-application error...an application failed to initialize properly
(0xc0000135). click ok to terminate the application.
3.it looks like my computer is strange...all the type is big and fuzzy
....like it is in the safe mode.
