Windows Installer - "ended prematurely"

When I try to install certain programs (MS office XP,
Norton Systemworks, etc.) I get a message as soon as the
install process starts. It says "Installation has ended
prematurely" and then it just closes.

I would really appreciate any help,

As unsafe as it sounds, disabling your AntiVirus software may resolve your issue.

Also, ensure you have updated virus definitions to avoid your Antivirus application preventing the install due to misinterpretations.
