Installation errors

My mother-in-law has a Compaq Presario desktop running WinXP Home edition.
40GB HD with 26GB free. Last week, while trying to install an upgrade to
Norton antivirus. she encountered problems with the installation and was
unable to compete the process. Somehow, it also affected MS Works 2002
(unable to run the word processor). After a couple of days of trying, i
believe I have uninstalled Norton & MS Works (with the intent of
re-installing both). Initially, I thought I was having problems with MS
Installer> It kept ending prematurely. I believe I now have that running
properly (somewhere along the line, the OS booted in Safe mode & Ive
corrected that). However< I am still not able to install Works: getting
error about not enough disk space available, when I know there is. I've also
not been able to re-install Nrton. Suggestion?

Run System Restore in Safe Mode (since Norton interferes with System
Restore). Pick a date prior to the upgrade attempt.

Consider uninstalling Norton. It doesn't play well with many programs.
There are many superior alternatives (NOD32, AVG, Avast to name a few).

Daave, thanks for the suggestion, however, there does not apear to be any
previous checkpoints available in System restore. Apparently, she did not
know to create one. Any other suggestions?

You earlier mentioned there was not enough disk space available.

How large is the drive? How much free space is there?

At this point I would just make sure all her data is backed up and then
perform a Repair Install. Hopefully you have an XP Installation CD.

I have the Compaq recovery CD's. I'll back the data up first, then try to
repair the installation. Thanks for your help

YW.

I am not familiar with Compaq's recovery CDs, so I'm not sure a Repair
install is an option. If it is, great. If not, a clean install can
always be done.

And make sure you stay away from Norton and McAfee!

Once the PC is to her liking -- with all of the Service Packs programs,
settings, etc., I recommend that you image the drive with a program like
Acronis True Image. Then it will be extremely easy to go back to a
pristine working state.

Good luck.
