KB971486 security update wants to install over and over??

2

2harts4ever

Good morning,

For the record I am using a Compaq Presario AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor
3300+, 2411MHz/1.93 GBs RAM, running Windows Xp Home, SP3., with IE8.

I just finished installing the monthly Microsoft Security updates and after
finishing I noticed I still received a taskbar notification that another
update was available. After I installed that one I realized it was one of
the 14 I just finished downloading and installing minutes before.

Is anyone else having this problem with KB971486?

Thanks and regards,

2harts4ever

Try this: Go and grab the recently released Windows Update Agent 3
from here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949104/. You'll want the x86
version. Install it, reboot, and run a Windows Update again and see if
it complains. If so, make doubly sure that it's already installed in
your C:\Windows directory as $KB971486 or some such name. If it is,
just tell Windows Update to hide it. Eventually it will go away on
it's own. Sometimes it's just a bug in Windows Update. Let me know how
it goes.

UPDATE: I had submitted this question yesterday but when it failed to appear
after two or three hours I then submitted it to the Windows XP Update forum
too. Now today I see both forums show my question. Sorry for any confusion
this might have caused.

Check the KB971486.log, located in WINDOWS, to see what is interfering
with the update's installation.
Or, clean boot XP and see if that gets the automatically downloaded
update to install properly:
How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353

When the kernel is replaced, as it is from this update, security
software may interfere with the operation.

Is anyone else having this problem with KB971486?

Sure am - out of two computers here one had the problem of KB971486
installing but windows update reporting that it is ready to be
installed (ad-infinitum)

Tried all the methods suggested in this thread and other threads (as
of Oct16,09), such as:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/910339

With no luck. Happy to just disable the update warning for this,
_but_ would like to be sure some malicious or unknown error is keeping
KB971486 from installing properly.

Any help appreciate, thanks.

The KB971486.log from your system never shows the files being Copied to
the Windows directory. Here's what it *should* be showing:

48.609: Copied file: D:\WINDOWS\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
48.740: Copied file: D:\WINDOWS\system32\ntkrnlpa.exe
48.760: Copied file: D:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386\ntoskrnl.exe
48.980: Copied file: D:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386\ntkrpamp.exe
49.090: Copied file: D:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386\ntkrnlpa.exe
49.300: Copied file: D:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386\ntkrnlmp.exe
49.431: Copied file: D:\WINDOWS\system32\DllCache\ntoskrnl.exe
49.481: Copied file: D:\WINDOWS\system32\DllCache\ntkrpamp.exe
49.571: Copied file: D:\WINDOWS\system32\DllCache\ntkrnlpa.exe
49.621: Copied file: D:\WINDOWS\system32\DllCache\ntkrnlmp.exe
49.831: Copied file: d:\windows\$hf_mig$\KB971486\SP3QFE\ntkrnlpa.exe
49.931: Copied file: d:\windows\$hf_mig$\KB971486\SP3QFE\ntoskrnl.exe
50.092: Copied file: d:\windows\$hf_mig$\KB971486\SP3QFE\ntkrpamp.exe
50.212: Copied file: d:\windows\$hf_mig$\KB971486\SP3QFE\ntkrnlmp.exe

And, the log is showing that the kernel files are being detected as OEM
drivers:

69.340: c:\windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe is in the list of oem
drivers...skipping copy!
80.656: c:\windows\system32\ntkrnlpa.exe is in the list of oem
drivers...skipping copy!

Since the files were never copied to Windows, the system is not prompted
for the required reboot:

97.140: RebootNecessary = 0,WizardInput = 1 , DontReboot = 1,
ForceRestart = 0

The log should be showing

174.310: RebootNecessary = 1,WizardInput = 0 , DontReboot = 1,
ForceRestart = 0

Either 3rd party software is preventing the file copy, it's interfering
with the proper detection of the kernel files, and they are being
detected as OEM drivers, or there is an issue with the number of OEM
..inf files.

You can try clean booting XP to see if that resolves the installation
failure: How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353
or, move *all* of the OEM .inf files to a temporary location and see if
that resolves the installation failure.
To be able to view contents of the WINDOWS\inf subfolder you will have
to open Folder Options in the Control Panel, click the View tab, and
check the box next to
Hidden files and folders -
Show hidden files and folders

UNcheck the box next to " Hide protected Operating System files
(Recommended)

Then click Apply, then OK. The OEM inf files are all named like this
oemX.inf
with X being the number of said files.

If neither of those methods resolve the update's installation failure
you can contact MS for *no-charge* support in getting KB971486 installed
properly: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971486

With no luck. Happy to just disable the update warning for this,
_but_ would like to be sure some malicious or unknown error is keeping
KB971486 from installing properly.

Any help appreciate, thanks.

Do you think hiding this update will mitigate the vulnerability that's
described in the Security Bulleting ?
Pretending the vuln doesn't exist because there's an issue installing
the update is precisely why so many systems are compromised.
MS offers *no-charge* support for issues with installing SEcurity
updates and adverse effects from installed Security updates:

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS09-058 - Important
Vulnerabilities in Windows Kernel Could Allow Elevation of Privilege

" Support
• Customers in the U.S. and Canada can receive technical support from

or 1-866-PCSAFETY. There is no charge for support calls that are
associated with security updates. For more information about available
support options, see Microsoft Help and Support.
• International customers can receive support from their local Microsoft

And, there is a workaround for getting this update installed.
Uninstall KB971486 from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.
Reboot.
Manually download the update from the MS Download Center and *save* it
to the root drive, which on most systems, is C:\ :
KB971486 for Windows XP 32 bit (x86)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...55-0756-4357-9d2d-6709e8426068&displaylang=en

Once the download completes close *all* programs and browsers.
Click Start > Run > Browse
Navigate to the root drive (C:\) and click once on it to highlight it,
then click Open.
In the Open: field add this the end what is showing /o
The line will now look like this

C:\WindowsXP-KB971486-x86-ENU.exe /o

NOTE the *space* between the e and the /

Then click OK and the update will install properly.
There should be a prompt to restart the system.
Do so and you're finished with this update.
