I keep gettting a message saying 2 days left to activate XP.
I thought we had 30 days. I just installed it about 3 days ago. ????
I have not been able to do it online cuz I'm unable to connect to the
internet on that computer. Looks like MS lied!!!

Suppose I'll have to use the phone option.

Oh, my.

IIUC, you can connect 80 days later**, but you can't use the computer
during the intervening 50 days, or in your case, 75 days.

** Or even later than that!

Two days left to ACTIVATE WinXP???
I thought the XP activation would continue (with no specified cutoff date),
BUT the XP updates would go offline - in April.

I think I got three days when I did a WinXP repair install.

You can always research this command, but I don't
know if this'll help or not. This is a "re-arm".
I use this on a WinXP VM which is not activated.

rundll32.exe syssetup,SetupOobeBnk

Apparently that fixed it, it's not nagging anymore! That's cool!!!!
Thanks

I wonder how the activation knew this is a reinstall, when I'm using a
different hard drive?????

I've been wondering about that. As I recall,
when people complianed about Product Activation
Microsoft said, "Don't worry. When XP goes
unsupported we'll issue a free activation code
for anyone who wants to keep running it."

I haven't heard anything about such a universal
code being issued so far, and I find it hard to believe
that Microsoft might do that when it means that
they might miss out on some sales as a result. I just
can't see them doing the honorable thing. And I'm
guessing that at the time they made the promise they
never imagined that 1/3 to 1/2 of the world would
avoid buying anything post-XP.

Glad it's OK now,
if it ever happens again, the phone activation method is not a big deal.
I've done it and it was no where near as bad as I expected, just took a
minute and that was it

I also remember hearing that rumor, but as far as I know it's not
correct. Microsoft never said that.

I know they said that when MS Money support ended. And they released the
last version for free and that one requires no activation.

You don't need an Internet connection. Just call the telephone number
you are given by the activation program.

You'll need to have the COA sticker with the product key.

Fascinating. I just looked this up (briefly) on the net, but found some
folks said this will just reset Windows Activation for 30 days, and that
they needed to do some additional registry tweaks which they posted. Have
you heard of that?

Re-arming can be done several times, and the reason a
specific number of re-arms is possible, is related to
what technicians do when preparing images for
enterprise machines in an IT department.

To give an example, a virtual machine (unactivated), offered
for download on the Internet, the person who prepared it,
used up all but one re-arm on the OS. And that was done
on purpose. You can generally only do these things so
many times, before you're cooked.

Let's hope Casey gets the dialup modem running, before
the remaining days are used up.

On later OSes, the command used would look something like.
Google for more details, because the "slmgr" program
has lots of nice options.

slmgr.vbs -rearm
slmgr /rearm
