Windows XP Activation - keeps prompting to activate

Hello,
I recently had to reinstall windows xp using a recovery cd from my laptop
manufacturer due to a problem which i think was caused by a virus. Since
then upon starting windows, it says i need to activate windows. A blue
window opens up which then says "Windows is already activated. Press OK to
exit"!! It now says i have 3 days left to activate.. I have run the guided
help program from microsoft to supposedly fix a script which interferes with
activation, to no avail. I have also renamed wpa.dbl and done regsvr32 on
regwizc.dll and licdll.dll, again to no avail!

Please help!
Many thanks
James

Have you contacted the laptop manufacturer?
They are the ones who undoubtedly supplied you with the OEM version of
Windows XP and are - unfortunately - your direct line of support.

But they aren't the ones who force WPA on users; MS is and should be
accountable for their sleazy and greedy actions.

Look - solution is simple activate by phone - activation will proceed
whether or not XP is OEM or retail.

Yep, but I have Ubuntu sitting over there on the shelf. I am waiting for
a computer buddy I know to get back from the States to try it out on
another machine before I put it on my production computer.

Except that the computer manufacturer has signed a contract with
Microsoft stating that they (the manufacturer) and not Microsoft will
be responsible for all end user support and product warranty issues
relating to the OEM versions of Microsoft products that they sell.

How convenient but not surprising.

That is the same situation as any other OEM product, including such
things as home appliances and entertainment items produced by major
manufacturers with the "house brand" labels of large retailers.

The only substantive difference is that most OEM products show only
the brand name of the seller whereas Microsoft has kept their name on
the OEM versions. For example I have a Sears TV set that was
actually made by JVC, but the name JVC does not appear anywhere on the
set or in the documentation - only Sears. It was a service tech that
told me that it was made by JVC and gave me the equivalent JVC model
number for it.

Sears TVs used to be made by Zenith. Neither Zenith nor JVC, however,
have a WPA or WGA like program installed on their TVs and, if they did,
I would hold them, not Sears, responsible. Sears would merely be guilty
of aiding and abetting. The same holds true for Dell and HP.
