Windows Installer Corrupted in XP Home

I am trying to install Office XP SP2 on a Windows XP Home
Machine, but got error "Windows Installer Service could
not be accessed. This error can occur if you are running
in safe mode or if WIndows Installer isn't correctly
installed." Tried to download and installed Windows
Installer 2.0, but got error message that the installer
package wasn't for this particular OS. Saw a Microsoft
Knowledgebase article that says Windows Installer 2.0
can't be installed in XP because it is already an
embedded part of the system. How can I make Windows
Installer work so that I can install the office service
pack?
