Hi group:

My grand-daughter's Gateway PC (apx 4 years old with Windows XP and an
extra hard drive) would only boot to a point and then lock up.

I ran her Gateway Microsoft Windows XP system disc and it gave two
options: Repair or Install (Clean with Reformatting or Dirty with no
Reformatting).

I tried to do the Repair but came to an impasse when I was prompted for
the Administrator's Password. My grand-daughter didn't have any idea
what the password was so I had no choice but to opt to the Dirty
Install (my grand-daughter didn't want to loose lots of data in the
PC).

The install went OK and the PC started working.

So what's the problem?

Windows installed on the second drive (D instead of overwriting the
original Windows on the C: drive.

There was NO prompt to advise me that I had a choice of drives to
Install Windows.

Now, what do I do?

The D: Windows works fine and the C: Windows still locks up.

I'd like to end up with Windows on the C: drive only.

Any suggestions to get there?

Hi Rich Barry:

Thanks for your posting.

Your link takes me to Michael Stevens, MS-MVP's website on his Windows
XP FAQ page at Item # 20 titled, "I have two installations of XP on the
same partition......."

My grand-daughter's installations of Windows XP are on two different
hard drives, not on a single hard drive within the same partition.

I sent an email to Michael Stevens on this matter and I look forward to
his comments.
