Install SP3 on computer with SP1

I just reinstalled Windows XP sp1 on my daughter's computer with a
new hard drive. Now I need advice on how to get all the updates
applied to this installation. I have a cd that I ordered from
Microsoft containing sp3 for my own computer which has Windows XP
MCE. Can this be used to install sp3 to daughter's computer now or
is it just for my setup?
Any help appreciated.

Should work - considering you said SP1 - especially will work if it is SP1a.

Reboot.
Install SP3 from the SP3 CD.
Reboot 3 times - with 10 minutes between each reboot.
Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and install whatever you need to
get to a *CUSTOM* scan.
Perform the custom scan.
Install all High-Priority (except maybe Internet Explorer 8 and anything to
do with "Office Live".)
Look through the "Optional Software" updates - avoid "Windows Search" and
anything to do with "Office Live".
Skip the Optional Hardware updates *completely*!

Reboot as needed, revisit that site/custom scan until you have everything
you need/want.

As far as I know there are only 2 flavours of the SP3 update for 32
bit systems, there is the small program which does an inventory and
then downloads what you need (ala Windows Update), and then there is
the full SP3 used by admins.

If you have a disk from MicroSoft, then chances are it has the full
servie pack on it. The file name should be:

WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe

and the size should be 331,805,736 bytes.

When you run this, it does an inventory of what you need and then
installs it.

Use the SP3 CD you have (it's not tied to one PC)

Newman,
the 'small' installation file [SP3] that downloads what
you need, is called a 'bootstrapper'.

This is exactly what I have and it worked seamlessly. Now I just
have to get her computer connected to the internet again and start
the Windows Update. Thanks to all who commented.
