Windows hangs on booting - atisgkaf.sys

This system is:
Compaq Pressario 2500 Laptop (Model 2538CL), XP Home SP1

Issue:
This laptop won't boot. When you power up the laptop you get the menu
with boot options.
If you select:
Normal - You see the XP splash screen, but then goes to a blank screen.
Last Known Good Configuration - You see the XP splash screen, but then
goes to a blank screen.
Safe Mode - Stops on file \windows\system32\drivers\atisgkaf.sys

I have:
1. Upgrade to the lasted BIOS
2. Booted from Compaq Operating System CD: Microsoft Windows XP Home
SP1 and Run chkdsk /r - It completes

Any type of help would greatly be appreciated.

There are several people with the same problem,and just as many solutions
hard to say with solution is for you.
