Loops on boot

I turn the computer on, it starts to boot, I see the compaq splash screen
then the blue windows is starting. Then it just restarts the process
over.

I have tried to repair windows:

I've tried The F8 to last known good config & F8 safe mode and it just
restarts from both of those as well.

Win XP SP3

I aslo tried this You can boot from the cd and press R to go to the
recovery console. Your best bet is to try running Checkdisk. So once in the
recovery
console, type chkdsk /r and press enter. It could take from 20 minutes
to a couple of hours, depending on the repairs it needs to make. That didn't
work

Went back into the Recovery Console using the Xp CD and this time typed
"fixmbr" that also didn't work

HD is about 7 months old. Computer is about 5-6 years old.

Running out of options here. I do NOT want to reformat if I do not have to.
I have alot of photos of the grand daughter on there.

Thank you

I can't tell if 'that didn't work' means that the chkdsk ran, but had no
effect, or if it failed to run. Assuming it ran, your next try should be a
Repair setup from the CD. Boot to cd, and press ENTER to run setup. it will
offer the repair right after the EULA agreement. If IE 7 was added, you are
going to need to repair that too.

Cobra -

Did you happen to run SpyBot Search and Destroy just before this happened?
A bunch of us have/had the same problem after the last SpyBot run. It seems
the newest updates from SpyBot cause problems if the latest version hasn't
been installed, but the update doesn't handle that automatically. Check out
the "Windows Won't Let Me In" thread.

chkdsk ran, which took awhile (showed % of progress). So I am going to
assume that the CHKDSK operation worked BUT did NOT solve the problem.

I tried a repair already, as mentioend in the first line of my post.

Adding to mark, I think your system overheated and you need to change the
thermal component on the CPU and clean up the dust while there, or better if
you took it to your local repair shop to do it effeciently for you and save
you not to burn the motherboard componenets by your body Electro static
charges lol

Check also that the PC power cable is firmly connected to the PC and to the
wall plug or the power extension :)

Check your power supply not flaky or going bad.
HTH.

If you are able to start from another media (CD or Linux disk) check your
user directory\desktop for shortcuts that don't have a target program. I had
a customer with the same problem you are having and the reason XP would not
load is some of the .lnk files were damaged.
