how to use a system restore point from a cd

every once in a while my laptop locks up and i need to do a re install of win
xp pro sp3. i would love to be able to burn a cd that would boot the laptop
and let me access system restore. when the problem happens i cant boot to the
os. the best that happens is i get to the xp splash screen and it locks up
there. none of the safe mode type choices or last known work. if i was able
to do this it would keep me from having to completely re install all the
software. thanks

I had to pop in my "XP Recovery CD" just yesterday to recover
using System Restore points. It costs $30 but is worth after
just the first time you need it.

And did you know that 40% of all re-installs are literally just
to set a registry key from 1 to 0 or 0 to 1 !

Points and lets you choose which one to recover."

If you were to accurately describe these lockups, I would imagine
someone here would be able to provide you with a much simpler and
quicker solution than reinstalling Windows! And I would predict you
would get fewer of these lockups (or they might stop occurring
altogether).

Be that as it may, it sounds like you are looking for a method to
perform what some call a Manual System Restore ("System" refers
specifically to the Windows XP operating system, not your PC in
general):

"How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from
starting"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

Note that you need to have an XP installation CD. If you don't, there is
an alternative method, mentioned here:

Actually, a better method to "go back in time" is to regularly image
your hard drive. That way, instead of futzing around with Windows, all
you would need to do is restore the image -- a quick and painless
action. :)

Wouldn't you rather find the reason for the lockups and fix that?
Sure you would.

The XP splash screen is the OS, so you are booting to the OS. It is
just not getting very far.

You have some other problem.
