Windows XP SP2 clean chkdsk but hangs on atisgkaf.sys

XP Pro...I got the blue screen - but it ran OK several times after
(laptop with data I must save or else!!!!) now won't boot normally.
Sometimes it boots in Safe Mode. In Safe Mode ordered a chkdsk /r on
reboot, which it did, and in a new Safe mode session, did a defrag.
Which it did but some files couldn't be defragged. On last several
reboots it hangs on atisgkaf.sys. Does not report any system errors. I
have Recovery Commander and it could NOT restore to a prior
checkpoint... It is not reporting disk errors, and RC says Boot sector
OK.

it seems that since that driver, as well as many others, are not loaded in
safe mode, then your pc would responde favorably. And as you may know, that
driver, as well as many others, attempt to get loaded in normal boot.

I would go into safe mode and find out where that driver is being loaded and
move it from the hard drive onto a floppy disk or a non system folder. That
way you can reinstall it if you encounter any errors. But it may be possible
that you need an updated version of it, or windows has installed a better
one, and the 2 are in conflict.

Look for the startup line of this old or uncompatiable driver possibly in
c:\autoexec.bat or c:\config.sys and delete or rem or * the lines referencing
the driver. And i would search the hard disk for the driver and move out of
the system folders, if the driver exists......
