Use The Brain God Gave You

I am hoping I can find some assistance here, as the computer manufacturer
(emachines) will not help me, since the system is no longer "under
warranty"...

I am the original purchaser of this system, and have the original disks that
came with the system...I don't recall the last time I restored this system,
but in the last 24 hours I have been getting the notification that Microsoft
has determined that my copy of Windows (WinXP) is not "genuine"...

As I said, emachines/gateway will not help me...so I'm stuck...

do I have to reformat my system just to clear this notification/error?...and
even if I did, whats to say it won't return at some future date?...could this
be the result of some kind of infection (I run spyware/virus/malware software
on this system on a regular basis) such as the recent confictor issue?...

any and all thoughts, ideas or assistance will be greatly
appreciated...since I can't get, it appears, get even a hint of an answer
from the system manufacturer...

thanks...

Course if Micro$lut didn't hold all its customers in total disdain and
assume all its customers are thieves, there would be no need for this
flawed program. Why should a paying customer like the OP have to jump
through these hoops to prove to Micro$lut what he or she already knows,
that he or she is running a legit copy of Windows?

If your tired of this kind of aggravation, check out
http://www.ubuntu.com/ It's Linux, very user friendly, FREE and you
don't have to activate or become "genuine". Not only that, it comes with
access to thousands of free programs.

Thanks for all the suggestions...I will get on this computer and attempt the
steps that have been posted...

To Alias...I would be more than willing to install Linux, but this
particular system is used by my less than computer savvy roommate...so I have
to keep it pretty simple...but yes...I am the original purchaser, and often
have the same thoughts as you regarding validation, if one has the original
installatin/restore disks from the manufacturer...in this case my frustration
is not particularly with MS, but with the manufacturer, who cannot seem to
even answer a simple question on this matter since the system is no longer
"under warranty"...oh well, thats for another post somewhere else...

I have only seen this once and that was because the original manufacturer
stopped paying MS for their VLM that they distribute with thier machines
and it became invalid. This could be the reason eMachines won't field this
issue.

Check the License sticker on your system for OEM printed on it. If it does
not have that you may actually have a Genuine Windows license not a OEM one
and that may work with a Genuine Windows CD for a re-install.

When your system tells you that your Windows is not valid does it redirect
you to the Windows website to purchase a valid license for $149.00 US? If it
does not or redirects you to somewhere else it is a strong possibility that
it is an infection attempting to steal your license number.
