Windows File Protection

I have received a Windows XP message, but before I comply
with it, I need to verify that it is actually a message
from Windows and not from some kind of virus trying to
break my system.

The message is: "Files that are required for Windows to
run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions.
To maintain system stability, Windows must restore the
original versions of these files. Insert your Windows XP
Professional CD-ROM now."

Is this a bone fide Windows XP message?

Thank you.

Yes, it is. It means that for some reason, a file that
was installed by Windows was changed or overwritten (and
not by an update).
