Windows File Protection

I bought a PC from Dell with Windows XP Media Edition. The system was
pre-loaded with a trial version of Norton Antivirus. When the trial
period expired, instead of renewing this product, I installed the
Computer Associates eTrust Antivirus product.

After installing eTrust, I now get persistent nag messages from
Windows File Protection: "Files that are required for Windows to run
properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain
system stability, Windows must restore the original versions of these
files. Insert your product CD-ROM now."

Unfortunately, Dell does not ship a Windows CD-ROM with their
products. What can I do to get rid of those annoying popup messages?

Thanks for your help!

Before installing CA did you uninstall Norton?
Did you run this utility?

I used the Windows Add/Remove Programs dialog to uninstall the trial
version of Norton Antivirus (which came without a product key) when it
expired, but I did not run this utility. Is it advisable to download
and run it now, and if so is there a possibility that it might break
eTrust or something else on the system?

1. Norton is the barnacle of the software world. You should use Add/Remove,
then Norton's sooper-sekret removal tool (for the edition you have), then
manually scan the registry for "Norton" or "Symantec," then remove any
Norton/Symantec folders and their contents. That should get you close.

2. Dell DOES provide a restore capability. It's in a hidden partion on your
hard drive. PLEASE review the documentation that came with your system and
create the CD you will need to restore your system.
