Windows File Protection: ntshrui.dll

S

Steve Nielsen

My home system has been getting this error periodically at startup,
about once a week or so. It prompts me for the Windows CD and seems to
correct it. Looking at Event Viewer is shows an Information event (not
an error event) entry:

Windows File Protection
Category: None
Event ID: 64004

The protected system file ntshrui.dll could not be restored to its
original, valid version. The file version of the bad file is 5.0.2134.1
The specific error code is 0x800b0100 [No signature was present in the
subject.].

I'm running fully updated Windows 2000 Pro, up to date Symantec
Antivirus, Kerio Personal Firewall, SpywareGaurd, PopupKiller and use
SpybotS&D and AdAware on a regular basis. Other than this error the
system runs flawlessly.

Anyone have any clues what is causing this?

Hi Seve,

Try running SFC /SCANNOW and let Windows File Protection run. Check to see
if any application is replacing this file.

I did SFC /SCANNOW and it finished with no prompt or report. Looking at
Event viewer it shows it found but failed to replace several files
(quite a long list). This was a few days ago (I've been ill for a few
days). Should I have disabled the firewall first? I thought it would not
matter since this was all local machine stuff and had nothing to do with
nor was I on the network.
