I've just switched from W98SE to XP

I tried to copy a file from my hard drive to my CD burner drive.
It went though the motions but nothing was actually copied.

What's going on?

Do you have burning software installed? XP has limited capabilities and needs

What is the name of the burning software you use? Have you updated the
burning software since you switched to XP? What is the make and model # of
the CD burner? Have you updated the firmware for the CD burner lately? When
you say it went through the motions are you talking about the burning
software?

Here's a short answer. Maybe this will help:

The "Copying" window from Windows Explorer did its thing and that's all.

I never got to the "Burning" stage.

Ok...Try this, right click on the recorder drives icon, properties, recording
tab and un-check the the box "Enable CD recording on this drive" and leave XP
out of the picture for now, ok.. Now just use your burning software, whatever
it is, to copy your files to your CD..

Can you burn/copy to the disk now?

I use Nero InCD to drag and drop files to CD+RW or DVD+RW disks and it works
fine. It's just that InCD seems to have a conflict with XP if I check the
box, so the workaround is to keep XP out of the process..

did?????

I don't remember 98se having a [HighMAT Extension for Windows XP CD-Writing
Wizard that can be used on a computer running the Microsoft® Windows XP
operating system to create a HighMAT CD that contains mixed media content
(such as audio, video and image files)]. Basically this is the burning app XP
uses.

Now Data files??? If you are saying that you can't copy mixed media content
then try this update http://www.highmat.com/download/

The HighMAT CD Writing Wizard creates discs that can be played back in any
consumer electronics device that displays the HighMAT logo.
HighMAT-compatible consumer electronics devices can offer different levels of
HighMAT playback support. These levels of playback support determine which
types of files can be played back by the device and is indicated by the type
of HighMAT logo on the device.

If it ain't compatible turn it off and use something else..Basically
speaking..
