Windows Explorer Slow

Windows explorer has suddenly become very slow at populating the list of
files in a folder.

When I open explorer I can expand folders in the left pane with no problems
as I work down to the folder I want to view, but when I finally select the
end folder it takes 30-40secs to display the list of files. The status bar
shows the number of files and MB straight away. My PC is on a home network
with other PC's often turned off, but I've deleted all network shares.

I've checked task manager while this is happening and it shows 99% system
idle process.
I've also set control panel for best performance rather than appearance.

Any other ideas please ?

Does it happen with all folders or just this one?
It may have something to do with the files that are in the folder and
are displayed in the right pane. I know for a fact that having large
zip files in the folder can cause this problem.

When was the last time you degragged that partition? BTW, the WinXP
defragger cannot defrag directories, only the files within them. Do the
folders have long file names? Do you have lots of various permissions set on
the problem directories?

It happens in all folders and on all drives. It doesn't matter if there are
just a few small files in the folder its still slow.
