Extremely Slow Windows Explorer

After a re-install of Roxio EMC 9, Windows Explorer is very, very slow
responding (eg. opening a drive or folder). I see no other apps running,
and essentially no CPU usage.
A google search shows a number of similar situations with WE, but no clear
explanation or remedy. Any ideas?

Is this on the WinXP SP3 computer you used to post your question?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

Yes, it's XP SP3. McAfee security suite installed and has been faithfully
kept current for over a year.
MS defender also installed and current. No other security software.

I've tried several of the suggested fixes that simply stop certain startup
items that can be reversed. No luck.

The problem appears with Windows Explorer and EMC 9. I deleted EMC 9 again,
re-booted, and re-installed but
the WE slow-down still there.

Thanks for the attention.

you might try to boot into
safe mode and see if
performance is better
there.

if so, then you might begin
normal mode with a
clean boot.

Roxio, much as I like it, is often the culprit for things like that.
Did you make sure to install any updates that were available?
If I were you I think I'd next try an uninstall/reinstall of Roxio before
going too much further.

Is McAfee Security Suite a freebie from your ISP?

No additional McAfee or Norton installed.

Yes, it's the McAffe Suite from Cox.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I discovered an "orphan" virtual drive. I've been unable to delete the
drive (using many suggestions I've received), so I finally just disabled the
drive thru
device manager. Both [Windows]-E as well as "Windows Explorer" (thru the
Assessories Folder) are again "fast".

At this point, I suspect that I did the Roxio re-install a few days ago
without having deleted the virtual drive I had created with it some time
ago.

I'd like to get rid of the virtual drive, but have, so far, been
unsuccessful, so simply disabling it will have to do for now.

Thanks to all who offered ideas.
